That was, indeed, a very useful means of finding the source. It was almost common sense: someone stumbles upon a fortune, and that someone will spend half of his fortunate in a day. Even if they couldn't find a particular person going on spending sprees, the economy was rather poor around Christonian at the moment, and no one seemed to be able to do a damn thing about it. If an area of the city was economically energized, there was a good reason to look into the high rollers spending there.

Randall was right on with that idea. Salinger would have been all for it, too, were it not for a few problems that he had with the idea. One problem in particular rubbed him the wrong way:

It was an eerie conclusion and one he wasn't too keen on living with: "Whoever is watching him will start watching us."

Salinger wasn't the best inspector, but he wasn't the worst; he was quick to unload rank if necessary and sometimes hesitant to use force if he had a shadow of a doubt. Likewise, he was hesitant to walk into a scene where guns would go blazing; he was a bit paranoid, and if there was a risk, he'd either take it or go the other way. There was no in-between.
