The Ballad of a Boy Named Suicide.

I saw the strangest thing last night.

Aboard a floating tomb.

All but me, were gone from sight.

Emptied, all the rooms.

The smell of death seemed absent, yet...

The air was full of doom.

Edicius woke up with a start, slamming his head into the bunk above his own. He groaned quietly and rolled out of his tiny cot, landing with a light thud on the loose wooden planks making up the floor of the pathetic sleeping quarters. He'd had a dream, and though it seemed very real and vivid at the time, it seemed his mind had begun to distort it. He remembered being aboard this ship, and discovering every other passenger and crew had disappeared. He remembered searching the ship for some clue and discovering his own mutilated and bleeding body impaled upon an ancient weapon not unlike those the nobles of his homeland tended to carry as a sign of power and status.

In a haze Ed stumbled out of the room and down a shifting hallway, nauseous and longing for the touch of earth under his weary bones. Ed, whose power relied on contact with the ground, had never done well on boats, or airships, or gondolas for that matter. He made his way to the deck of the ship, to relieve his uneasy stomach by any means necessary.

The sloshing of fresh sick into choppy waters was hardly the relief he'd hoped for, and he found himself thinking of another youth on board, roughly the same age as he. She was dying, this much was clear from the knowledge he'd gained while still benefiting from the education offered to a noble's son, disowned though he was. She would make the journey, most likely, and die shortly after their arrival in Kalmarden. She had perhaps a week to live.

Edicius felt for the girl, for he had died once, a horrible and painful death at the hands of his father. He was born into a society where one's gifts were a sign of not only their heritage, but their status in society. Those who were blessed with the ability to harness magic, and bend it to their will considered more valuable, more important than normal citizens. And with these abilities being genetic, families often rose to power based solely on their ability to reproduce and spawn more entities capable of controlling the supernatural.

Edicius was a victim of this society. From birth, he had no apparent gifts to speak of, and thus, by name and action was sentenced to death by his own father so as to protect the family's image. His mother, who was an outsider initially, but blessed with impressive powers which promised her a position as a noble. Unlike the others, however, her control was over life and death itself. She could manipulate, heal, and even save the human body from any physical afflictions. The supernatural sicknesses that were borne of inbreeding, and other genetic diseases that were bonded to one's abilities and gifts, however, were beyond her reach.

Edicius, tragically, was thought to be one such subject, if metaphorically. However through cruel and fatal assault, Edicius was able to provide with his mother's silent shielding. He pretended to die, as part of her plan to appease their family, and society. Afterward she smuggled his tattered body out of the country where he would presumably be safe. And yet, this was not the end of his suffering. He was recruited into a miserable war between similarly gifted individuals. Survival and escape became his companions once again, the second time before he reached the age of ten standard years.

His body began to deteriorate over time, the result of inferior genetics mostly to blame. Though his mind thrived, as did his ability. Ed was shaped into a weapon, before he was half the minimum age of a soldier in most countries. And so now he found himself enduring the miserable concept of sea travel to go to a place where disease and war were merely nonexistent. A land steeped in legend and superstition, where people claimed to believe in monsters, and various sorts of evil creatures.

Perhaps there was a reason for the way this place existed. Perhaps their culture was advanced beyond what he had experienced in the past. Perhaps they had an answer for his wilting body, and inferior eyesight. Perhaps they could cure that girl, and maybe the reason for their peace was a superior intellect, some ultimate, universal secret that allowed Kalmarden to seem so ideal to anyone who'd done their research. Edicius could only guess, and hope that his suffering was nearly over.

Kraven had turned Kalmarden upside-down recently in his search of a suitable pair of children to be Ana's new playthings. Nothing yet had suited Kraven's insane expectations, and so he had taken to searching the coastline and ports for any possible travelers or newcomers to Kalmarden for possible matches. Usually he knew what he needed to know before he'd ever stepped foot into a town, or approached a dock. The same was true now.

Kraven was not a bad man. He was indeed warped, resulting from his absolute obsession with Ana, but he was by no means evil. The parameters he used involved whether a person would benefit from being turned as much as they dealt with the value they presented to his mistress. After all his searching, Kraven knew this excursion had turned up fruit.

Before the ship ever docked, Kraven felt the minds of who he was looking for. Two children, extraordinary, both reeked of a cocktail of disease and death. Both separated, permanently, from their families. No one would miss them. Neither were long for this world in their current condition. The girl's sickness more acute, progressing quicker than the boy's degenerative, and cumulative illnesses. Kraven's eyes mirrored a demons as he dismounted his steed and slowly made his way into the tiny trade town, already probing and twisting the young minds. First the boy, and he slowly bled into the girl's--AAAGH. Kraven clutched at his temples with his armored fists as he took a step back. Guarded, special, it seems the girl is just as unique. Kraven squeezed his eyes shut as he endured the ringing in his ears and the and the pounding in his brain.

He would have to get closer, perhaps do more than enact his will on them through mental stimuli, trickery, deceit. He would find another way, he would obey Ana.

Skipping ahead.
Kraven

He had spent the day coercing and scheming, for Ana. It had not taken him long to coax some refugees with a dwindling supply of money back to his swanky estate to await nightfall. All he'd told them was that they'd been chosen, if they wished, to be adopted by his Mistress. He'd told them that she was having them over to dinner, and that they would meet her tonight. It had not been hard, after telling Edicius that his Mistress had the best medical staff available to help his new friend. Not after telling him that she wouldn't have to suffer any more.

Edicius

They had arrived quickly enough. They'd met a man shortly after arriving in the little port town, who'd seen something in them. Enough that he'd promised his superior was a woman looking to adopt, and that Ed and the girl from the boat fit her description. Ed sighed as he looked at the girl, who'd been taking a nap. She was getting sicker, and fast. She didn't have a lot of time if the lady's medical staff wasn't everything Kraven had described. And it had to be, if everything else he'd said was true. Ed had never seen a house like the one they were in now, and he said his mistress' was infinitely bigger in scale. They had hardly an hour left now before Kraven said they would depart for dinner at The VonHagen Estate..

“Mama...”

The little girl whispered in her sleep. She tossed and turned, even though it made her small body ache. Her fever had waned, but she still saw the haunting images, of her parents being killed. Sophitia had come from a military family. She was well versed in all things practical. Suddenly being in this position, was not practical at all! Her mother had told her that she could die from the cold- literally. Her chest heaved up and down in painful breaths.

She had smelled the ocean, felt the rocking of a boat and the kind words of a man. Now the scene had changed again- she was in a bed, getting warmth from unfamiliar covers. “Papa?” Her mind told her that this was not her house, but her fever argued with her good sense.

Her chest began to slow and her breathing became more labored. She thought she saw her parents, but it was really just the image of Ed. Her mind haunted her, with memories that had only happened moments before. Sophitia waited for dark sleep to take her. If she could join her parents, she would be the happiest child.

Edicius

Edicius was at her side in an instant, a hand on her shoulder to try and rouse her from dreaming, and yet a calm and soothing voice to put her at ease so she could get as much rest as possible.

" It's me, Sophi, from the boat. Don't worry, I found a man who has some doctors who can help you. They work for a nice lady who is going to take care of you, of us. It won't be long, just save your strength. "

Ed was more likely trying to convince himself of what he was saying than to convey it to the sick young girl. But he believed it to be true, and he wanted her to believe it as well. Kraven had made a convincing case on the lady's behalf...somehow. The details of his argument were fuzzy, but he remembered being reassured, his mind more at ease than it had been since he'd left Roth.

" His name is Kraven, I met him when the ship came into port. We made it, Sophi. We're in Kalmarden...we'll be okay now. We'll be just fine. "

Kraven

The armored man appeared at the door of the room, the last of the day's light entering the room, and being skewed by the window, before falling on him. He was in all black, as usual, but for once he was smiling. What the children here couldn't know, however, was that he was smiling because he had pleased his mistress by finding them to be turned and not because he'd found them a home. He looked carefully at the state of the girl, they would have to hurry if she was to make it. The boy had plenty of time left, however, without intervention he would not live to see his twenties.

" Lady Ana awaits, we should get underway. Her estate is not far from here. "

Ana paced in front of a large picture window. It was purely for show really. She only came to this window to observe guests as they arrived for "dinner" parties. She would never be seen sitting by it during the day, taking sun -- though her sweet pale skin appeared sunkissed. It was a lie, of course. She had been blessed enough by some god passed to keep her skincolor and not turn pasty white like so many of her children had. A few carried her trait though and retained the skin of their humanity. It was all that they would ever retain of a life gone past.

"Good. I see them coming." Ana spoke as she swirled a glass of wine. She smiled genuinely for the pick that Kraven had made. Her eyes sought his form and found it leading the troupe into the clearing. Her home was huge, and part of that party would be lead to the dungeons once they were detained. Her children had to eat, of course. "See to the older ones. I want Kraven to bring me the two children. They are mine. No one else may touch them, if they do I will see their heads on a pike by tomorrow evening. Do you understand, Blythe?"

A quiet girl of twenty stood by, her hands on her hips and she nodded. She was a beautiful girl, which was why Ana had picked her some time ago. She made a pretty companion and a fierce hunter -- her auburn hair a pretty fixture against her pale skin. The girl was also smart and knew when to speak and when to obey. She was displaced only by Kraven who was intensely loyal beyond compare -- it was a shame he was human. Ana liked him that way though, and Blythe smiled demurely down at Kraven as he lead the party into the courtyard. She fancied him, but more for his blood and prowess than anything else.

"See that Kraven brings the children immediately. The girl looks not long for this world. She'll be no good to me dead." When Blythe left Anabel looked down on the courtyard and watched the children carefully. They would be splendid little companions for her, very pretty indeed. They would be small and delicate and incredibly efficient at killing their prey -- so unassuming as that prey would be. Her blue eyes virtually sparkled with desire and glee as she anticipated their turning and her dinner.

Some sort of renewed energy crept into Sophitia's body. Maybe it was the sound of Ed's voice, or the fact that she took this new place as her past home. Her mind was still confused from the sickness, trying to piece together missing puzzles of information. The little girl motioned for Ed to hold her, speechless as always, but her eyes told another story entirely. She was lively for being so sick, smiling up at the man who had taken them in. He reminded her of her father- such a kind man in her world.

Her mind was still trying to take in everything that had happened. Ed would see the sickness rise and fall in her- like the ocean waves themselves. It was unpredictable at this point. She looked at Ed with hopeful eyes. “We go see mama now?” Her little voice asked, barely above a whisper.

Edicius

In plain view of Kraven, Sophitia, and Ana, as well as the wagons full of invited guests, Kraven rocked the very earth beneath Sophi's feet, and rolled her into his arms. He was a manipulator of earth, and able to travel indefinitely without tiring. His powers had rusted over somewhat in their long stretch of inactivity, though he had taken to invoking them to amuse or indulge Sophi. He smiled as he cradled her, stepping carefully over the small mound of earth that had been created to move her with ease and stared up at their new home. It was beautiful, more than he ever could have imagined him for himself, but more importantly, he shed a single tear of joy for the home he had found for his dear new friend. He noticed that they were beginning to split from the other guests, but he paid them no attention. From what he understood they were guests of Ana, blessed as Ed was to receive the attention of Ana, though on a much more temporary basis.

Kraven

Kraven's eyes immediately found Ana in her window, and was torn from staring at her distantly only by Ed's display of talent. He raised an eyebrow, as his eyes widened with what was almost terror. He never could have anticipated this. When delving into Ed's mind he had never seen any such thing, even as he did it, it was such a natural thing he did not think it through. He channeled the earth, and moved it without thinking, simple as breathing. He could not begin to imagine whether this would be a disappointment or a treat to Ana. And if this was so, what could he have missed in Sophitia when he had met the mental block in her earlier and ceased reading her mind. Kraven lowered his head and resigned to recounting the feeders in his mind. It had been daunting spreading out their origins so that no one area of Kalmarden felt their absence after they were gone. As always, they would simply vanish, with vague stories of their having left the country to work for Ana and their belongings would be either sold elsewhere or disposed of, if there was nothing of interest to his mistress. Kraven walked a slow pace alongside the children, and left the unloading of the passengers to his few men after which they would be left in the care of several of Ana's brood. He would take care to deliver the children for inspection with haste.

Ana would be found sitting in a chair at the end of the hall when Kraven and the children arrived. Blythe would slip in behind them and rest her back against the door. No one would be leaving this room alive, except Kraven. Oh the children would survive. They would become vampires in the process, however -- and thus become undead. Ana smiled, and pressed her fingertips to her lips -- blowing out kisses toward the children and Kraven.

"Oh, you have arrived!" Anabel rose from her seat and smiled beautifully. Her hair was a pleasant shade of blonde and her eyes a sweet shade of blue. She looked every inch the unassuming hostess. Kraven would know her for the actress that she was.

"You have brought me very special children indeed. The girl will indeed need some attention as you suggested." Ana spoke as she stepped closer, her dress rustling like dry leaves in a breeze. She knelt on the floor, more even with the children, looking at them both. "I saw that you have a power, young man. I like that. It intrigues me. You will have to tell me about it some time. It could be useful for the farms here."

Ed would see that Ana greatly approved of his power, as would Kraven. She was curious about the girl and pointed at her.

"I am going to need Kraven to take her into the room next door, okay? She will be fine in time. She must go now though and I will attend her myself to make sure she is getting the best care possible. Then I will return to you. Is that alright, my son?"

It was an unspoken thought between everyone in the room. They would be her children before sunrise. They just didn't realize it wouldn't be through adopotion.

Edicius

Edicius marveled at the room as he entered. It was no more if only slightly more extravagant than any other he'd passed through in this place to get here, but he knew it would be some time before he ceased to be amazed by the conditions in which these people lived. He remembered back to his own manor from which he was expelled, the unforgiving streets he roamed and the filthy hovel he shared with the other kinetics after being recruited as a soldier, or more appropriately: A murderer.

Ana herself however was perhaps the most amazing sight. Many of the people around here seemed vibrant and full of excitement and yet their bodies looked pale and sickly. But Kraven, and now Ana looked like amazing, blazing figures of beauty and hope. He listened to her intently, gratefully and tried to no avail to withhold a single tear which fell down his cheek as she mentioned his usefulness. The only person who'd seen him or his powers fit for anything but death and chaos was Sophi, and now there were two in one place. Using his power to grow things, to create and nurture life. It was an amazing proposition, and one to which he happily agreed with a nod of his head. She turned her attention from him however, to the very sick young girl in his grasp. He was reluctant to let her go, for any reason, even though he had only known her a few months. The last time he had let her out of his sight on that boat, nearly everyone had died in the night but the pair of them. There was no reason for them to have been spared while they rested, and he didn't like taking chances with her life now, more than ever.

" I...yes, of course, but. " Edicius stammered clumsily over his words, an unusual happenstance for him, usually the brave and confident sort, " Can I not accompany her? If she is to be attended to by the medical staff, is there no way I can sit in? I promise not to get in the way, my lady. "

He was as much set off on his awkward rant by the word 'son' as any suggestion that he should be separated from Sophi until after she was healthy, and his being was slowly filled with a great appreciation and sadness, both at the same time. Even his mother, who had loved him enough to save him from death at the hands of his father...had never used the word son to refer to him. And his father certainly never would have admitted to Edicius being akin to him, or his prized sons.

Ed's power, was not as dark as this woman's gift. Sophitia could see different shades of shadow resonating off of her figure. These were not shadows that other people could see. She had learned this years ago- before she had become so sick. Her eyes averted to the ground, shying away from Ana. Ed wasn't going to be joining her? But he was always with her! She began to protest, until she saw the shadows rise from the woman's form.

Ugly...

It was a remark directed at Ana. She was speaking of the shadows, the aura's she could always see, not the physical beauty the woman possessed.

The world had always made her sick. Whenever she looked at someone, she could feel their pain and experience their nightmares. It was a world that constantly haunted her and now it had brought her here. Maybe mommy and daddy had been taken away because of her? The thought constantly irritated her.

That was when she began to feel faint. Maybe it was the many shadows rising off of Ana, or it was the fact that Ed wouldn't be with her. Whatever was causing her bout of dizziness, she let it take over and fell to the floor.

She didn't want to wake up to the ugly woman ever again...but fate had a strange way with this child.

Kraven

Anabel's champion roared in protest at what could have very well been an innocent remark on Sophitia's part. He poured his own mind into hers, dug deep, seeping into her mind like poison and revealing her every intimate thought. It was not a gift Kraven invoked lightly, and was usually only to be used on food...or enemies. He was beyond being able to interpret her seeing any shadows, or that it might be related to her sickness.

Sophi's mind would explode into unpleasant thoughts and terrible dreams. It wouldn't last long, but in the space of a few short seconds she would experience nearly every negative thought she had ever had in the form of a barrage of images and sounds screaming past her at incomprehensible speeds. But she would understand what they each meant, and each individual experience would escalate to an even worse one. In less than ten seconds, it would be over, and unconscious or not she would be feeling fear, remorse, regret.

" I am sorry, My Lady. When she awakes, she will be made to apologize. "

"She is but a child. Children have a way of speaking that we forget as adults." Anabel smiled and gathered Sophi into her arms, personally. Oh but the child had been so completely aware for just the breath of a moment. It made Ana smile even more. It was good that she had chosen the sick child to die first -- she would rebound quickly, but not nearly in enough time to save Ed.

"I am sorry, son. She is quite ill and must be taken care of immediately. She speaks nonsense now and I fear she may be too late in coming to aid." Lies, all lies. The child's heart was still beating fairly strongly, if erraticly due to Kraven's power. "Quickly now, Blythe. We must get the doctors." Ana looked somberly at the girl standing by the door, but there was a glimmer in her eye that Kraven and Blythe would see. She was amused, greatly, at the game at hand.

And, well, she was hungry.

Without another word Ana swept Sophi into the next room. If Ed were aware, he might realize that she moved with an unusually fast pace, or that she had a grace about her that most women failed to accomplish even on their best of days. Ana was a dominating presence, one that spoke of huntress and regal heiress -- all wrapped into one neat and too beautiful package. Could there be ugly vampires? Of course, and Ana could easily look deformed and decrepit if she so desired. Beauty attracted the prey, surreal beauty trapped them. Humans were so petty in that aspect.

The door would be barred against Ed's approach. The girl was laid out on the dining table which had nothing but a clean, pristine white table cloth draped over the dark oak surface. Blythe hopped nimbly onto the table and held the child's head in place with one hand clamped over her mouth should she wake during the turning process. Would it hurt? Infinitely. Would she change in appearance? Not radically. Her disease would pass and old scars would fade -- she would adopt some of Ana's sharper features, but only some. She would appear to be none other than a sweet and pretty little child that Ana had adopted, that had some likeness to her -- perhaps a distant niece.

Ana extended the girl's arm and let it dangle off the edge of the table, her skin in sharp contrast to the white shroud cloth beneath her. She smiled, and as with all of the children that she turned, she drew a sharp blade vertically down the girl's inner elbow. When the blood began to flow she glared at Blythe, whom she could hear inhale sharply. She growled, territorial of the child beneath her hands and then she smiled as the blood pooled in the small depressed area where she had cut. She let a small rivulet run down the girl's arm and pool into her hand before she descended on the wound.

The girl would be almost completely drained. Almost. She would die, yes. Her heart would stop beating and she would be dead. Ana raised her head, wiping a napkin daintily across her lips. She was a clean feeder -- meticulous about her clothing and hair. Some of her children fed like wild beasts, but not those closest to her. They kept their heads for just that reason. The child would be weak, and would not regain her strength until she fed for the first time. And even then it would be some time before she was strong enough to take her own prey. Ana smiled and raised the girl's own hand to her lips, rubbing her own blood against them -- coating them in the dark coagulating substance that would dictate her world forevermore. It was a small ritual of Ana's, and one that came in handy if she changed a human without a feeder human to supply. This child's own blood would sustain her, and Ana nodded to Blythe to take her regardless of the state she was currently in. Blythe was resillient, immune to physical pain like no other child of Ana's. So if the child bit -- she would not find purchase, just more of Blythe's hard iron-like hand stuffed into her mouth.

"Hide her. She has no way to escape and will not be strong enough to run. She is beholden to me, now." Ana, at least, had given her a way to survive and live. She snatched the bloodied cloth off the table and quickly put down a new one, kicking the bloodied rag out of the door behind Blythe.

"Kraven. Bring in Ed, he will be glad to know that the girl is alright. Resting, now." When Ana looked at Kraven she smiled, her eyes aglow with delight. Now, now it was Ed's turn. He was completely sensible too. There would be no way that Ana could get the boy to willingly lay down on the table as Sophi had. So, without further delay her eyes turned to flint -- hard. She never turned her gaze to Ed, her eyes on Kraven. In the breath that it took her to take two steps toward Edicus, Anabel had changed from the beautiful flaxen haired young woman to a raven haired dark eyed fiend. Oh she was still pretty and delicious in every aspect -- she made certain of it. She relished in the dying that was to come, and oh but she was still hungry!

"Hold him." The order was unmistakable. "We can do this the easy way, or you can suffer and be miserable for struggling."

Ana wouldn't bother with the crook of Ed's arm. She would mark him as he lay dying as hers. It just left less scaring and in a less obvious place. Her aim was Ed's heart. The quicker she subdued the boy, the easier he would be to handle. She would slice his chest open with her sharp blade and descend on him -- draining him dry and stopping his heart as quickly as she was able. As was her signature, she would leave some of his own blood for him to suckle when he was capable.

Though she fully expected him to fight and attempt to die. He would realize that she wouldn't allow that to happen. Not for a single moment.

Edicius

Ed could not have known what had transpired. He heard Sophi's comment, and he caught her as she fell. He took Ana's explanation as having easily forgiven Sophi, but as he looked to Kraven, he began to worry slightly. He did not move, he shifted only slightly before Ana spoke, and yet his eyes...his eyes were so full of hate, and of malice. It seemed unlikely that one soul could harbor such ill feelings for another sentient life. Ed held Sophi protectively, and hugged her once before she nodded and allowed Sophitia to be taken from him.

Ed could only stare at his own feet as Sophi was whisked away, ignoring Anabel's unusual haste, and Kraven's hate-filled eyes. Something is incredibly wrong here. Ed felt the strangest feeling of the want to be calm and casual, as though someone else were forcing it on him. Edicius looked up and saw that Kraven's eyes had turned warm and kind again, but they were focused on Ed, now. He felt this once before, at the port. Was this...a trick, maybe? He couldn't be sure, it was hard to concentrate on anything but the feeling that everything was going...according to plan.

Ed's eyes widened, he felt the briefest moment of clarity, and overheard Ana's voice from the other room, while he glimpsed Kraven making the subtlest step toward him. " Hide her. "

" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! " Edicius' eyes glazed over. He was instantly blinded, and completely in tune with the earth only a few feet beneath this corrupted palace. He shoved his open palm toward Kraven's stomach, and while it seemed a fruitless gesture at first, immediately following the action a spear of rock and earth splintered through the polished floor and impaled Kraven through his stomach, hurling him up and nailing him to a corner of the ceiling as Ana walked into the room.

He roared liked a caged animal, and lifted both hands upward, palms flat while he spoke mercurial and nearly incomprehensible commands. " Bring her to me, we leave, I forget all about this place. " It was indeed a command, and Edicius could have no idea what it was he was getting in to as he lifted the entire estate and over ten feet of the earth beneath it into the air. Outside the window, the nearby treeline would begin to slowly disappear below the lip of the window.
